Beginners English Dictionary Idioms and Expressions page

An English idiom is an expression in English whose meaning is not what would normally be understood by looking at the literal meaning of the words making up the expression. For example, 'kick the bucket'. A new learner of English would never understand why someone would literally 'kick a bucket' unless they were angry. However, in English 'kick the bucket' is a somewhat rude expression meaning to die. How and why this expression came to be is not important. However, learning the expression and realizing that most every native speaker of English understands what 'kick the bucket' means is important.

Our goal for this part of the Beginners English Dictionary is to promote the learning of English language through idioms and expressions. We hope you enjoy reading them, and learning more about the English language.

There are three entries for each idiom or expression, as follows: the short form of the expression, the expression used in a sentence, and the meaning of the expression.
