Welcome to the Beginners English Dictionary
In our modern times, English has become one of the most frequently spoken languages in the world. Also, it is spoken and studied in more places around the world than any other language. There are hundreds of millions of fluent English speakers and many more who speak it or study it as a second language. It is the language of computer, science, humanities, tourism, and many other human endeavors.
As publishers, we offer what we hope is a useful, online beginners English language dictionary.
We believe what the linguists have discovered—that there are about 1,500 basic words essential for “survival” in any modern language. Some call this the “Global English” list of essential words.
We have provided a definition for each of these essential words in plain language that can be understood by most beginning students of the English language. To illustrate the use of each of these essential words, we have also provided an example sentence.
